Dr Angus Watts

MBBS (UQ), FRANZCR

Principal Radiologist

Panorama Radiology Specialists’ founder, Dr Angus Watts, is a Fellowship-trained diagnostic and interventional radiologist and longterm Gold Coast resident, who has provided general, musculoskeletal and interventional radiology services to the Gold Coast community since 2004.

Angus was formerly a Partner and Managing Partner at South Coast Radiology prior to the business’s corporatisation and national expansion in 2014 to form what is now known as ASX-listed Integral Diagnostics. More recently Angus served as SCR’s Clinical Director before moving on in 2021 after almost 18 years.

Angus provided diagnostic and interventional radiology services to the Gold Coast community at Pindara Private and John Flynn Hospitals over that period, including musculoskeletal, neuroradiology and body MRI, complex imaging guided procedures, CT Coronary Angiography, oncology imaging, prostate mpMRI, women’s imaging, paediatric imaging, emergency and general radiology services.

Over almost 2 decades in clinical radiology on the Gold Coast, Angus earned a reputation for his meticulous attention to detail, depth of clinical experience, results-driven approach to interventional procedures and a tireless work ethic. Since 2004 Angus has performed around 28,000 imaging-guided procedures and reported around 50,000 MRI examinations for patients in the Gold Coast region, and has been regularly sought after for opinions on complex clinical cases by leading specialists and GPs.

Angus grew up in regional NSW, later moving to Brisbane for high school, then completed 6 years of Medical School at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1994. A keen surfer, Angus was naturally drawn to the Gold Coast where he worked as a resident doctor at the old Gold Coast Hospital for a number of years.

In 1998 Angus returned to Royal Brisbane Hospital to undertake 5 years of advanced specialist training in Radiology, where he completed the RANZCR training program followed by Fellowships in Interventional and Musculoskeletal Radiology.

In 2004 Angus joined South Coast Radiology where he variously served as Partner, Managing Partner and Clinical Director before moving on in 2021.

In 2018 Angus had the privilege of working as a musculoskeletal radiologist at the GC2018 Commonwealth Games, working closely with elite athletes and their support teams.

An accredited CT Coronary Angiography reader, Angus and has a keen interest in the evolution of CTCA technology and its role in clinical practice, including advances in radiation dose reduction and CT Fractional Flow Reserve analysis, which promises to change the paradigm of diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease, which is sadly still the number 1 killer worldwide.

Angus is one of a handful of radiologists in the region who read Prostate mpMRI (multiparametric MRI), a complex but groundbreaking technology that has changed the way prostate cancer is diagnosed and managed, by enabling direct visualisation of prostate cancer on MRI, thought by many to be impossible just a decade ago. Angus trained with pioneering Prostate mpMRI radiologist, Dr Eamonn McAteer, whose keen insight into the field has helped bring mpMRI technology into mainstream clinical practice on the Gold Coast.

An avid fan of rugby, rugby league, cricket and boxing, and a lifelong surfer, diving into musculoskeletal radiology was a natural progression for Angus. Over 18 years of busy clinical radiology practice at Pindara and John Flynn Hospitals, Angus gained valuable experience across a vast spectrum of orthopaedic, spinal, neuromuscular, sports medicine and rheumatological conditions, in addition to general radiology. Angus’s depth of knowledge, experience and easy-going approach meant he was frequently sought after by colleagues for opinions on complex musculoskeletal, procedural and general radiology cases.

After almost 2 decades in clinical practice, Angus came to believe that the optimal environment to deliver his services to the Gold Coast community lay in the form of a smaller, boutique clinic with a personalised, patient-focussed approach, alongside a team of highly skilled technologists and leading edge technology, without the high-turnover pressure experienced by many corporate providers.  And from that vision, Panorama Radiology Specialists was borne.

PRS’s core foundations are to provide a premium, personalised, patient-centric service, dedicated to high quality imaging, continuing medical education, and exploring the potential of emerging technologies particularly in the fields of neuromuscular MRI and cardiac CT.

Dr Watts is alway happy to discuss clinical cases with referrers, offer advice on imaging pathways, or discuss imaging-guided procedures that may be of benefit depending on individual clinical circumstances.
